the fruit of the womb a reward." -Psalm127:3
Welcome to Life on Ice, a website dedicated to the Embryo Adoption of C & R Upchurch.
It has been our deepest desire and most challenging quest for the past 8 years, to have a baby.
To have and enjoy what we think is the best thing in life; Family.
In 1999, R was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
This diagnosis means getting pregnant isn't easy. After years of trying to get pregnant,
we decided to seek out a Fertility Specialist. Several humiliating tests later we discovered R was not ovulating and C's sperm were abnormally shaped. This combination made it next to impossible to conceive. The doctor gave us the option of IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization), but the cost was so astronomically high it was not an option for us. We felt hopeless.
Sort of like being at sea, destination in plain site but not quite enough wind for our sail.
My husband and I have done everything we know to do, both spiritually and physically, with the exception of one last thing.
We decided in October of 2012 that we are going to try Embryo Adoption.
This is a program where couples who've gone through the IVF process have excess embryos in Cryopreservation (This means they are frozen). The choice for the left over embryos is to destroy them, donate them to science OR to couples who can't have children. This would mean I would give birth to the adopted embryo making it our child to love and care for.
We began researching what it would take to make this adoption a reality.
We were so excited at the prospect of becoming pregnant with an adopted child, but it all came to a screeching halt when we found out the cost. It felt like a 1000 LB. anchor had been dropped.
Our goal and prayer has been to get pregnant ASAP. We can't let another year go by without a child.
We are determined to find a way!
Not to mention, both of us turning 37 next year is a big kick in the pants to get creative! “FUNDRAISER” is what came to mind.
We thought about the countless fundraisers in the world, from buildings and research, to Girl Scouts and animal rescue;
and we thought, “Why not for a baby?” we assumed we’d be the first to do such a crazy thing, but after researching online it was comforting to find many successful adoption fundraisers out there.
So this is it; our Baby Fundraiser - Website, Facebook page, and email campaign. A call for help in our time of need.
Our invitation to family, friends and ANYONE willing to help us cut the anchor and set sail!
The truth is we have to raise $10,000.
We know. It’s seems big, but it’s OK.
We’ve done the math over and over, and with the many friends and family we are so blessed to have, this really is a cinch!
We feel very confident and excited! You can help this ship sail! It feels kind of scary to make our private world so public and it’s never easy to “ask”, but when we picture all our loved ones gathering around us, bringing their gift to help, a feeling of love and warmth washes over us. Being denied the chance to be parents like everyone else seems so unfair, but now we realize having everyone play a part in our dream is so much sweeter.
Your gift is the gust of wind we need.
